Hydroponics is a tried and true ancient method of growing plants using mineral rich solutions rather than soil. In conventional methods, soil acts as a mineral reserve, but in hydroponic conditions, the water is rich in minerals, so the soil would be redundant. Used as a standard in biological research, hydroponics is a great teaching tool as well as indoor cultivation.

There are two types of hydroponics: those that utilize a solution culture, and those that use a medium culture. Solution hydroponics use only a liquid nutrient solution. Medium hydroponics use a solid medium for the roots, either sand, gravel or Rockwood mainly.

In Medium Hydroponics, there are two main types of irrigation, sub irrigation and top irrigation. In either case, reservoirs are made from plastic, concrete, glass, metal or wood. All containers should be opaque and exclude light in order to keep algae growth to a minimum in the nutrient solution. And of course, you need clean, filtered healthy water. You can use tap water, but you'll want to epmloy faucet water filters for the best results.
